 The venue was designed as a multi-purpose theatre for Bloemfontein.

The Auditorium

The auditorium of the Sand du Plessis Theatre is unique in South African theatre architectural design. Provided with continental seating (no centre aisle), and separate entrances for various rows, the auditorium has no distinct balcony but is divided into four staggered seating areas, each giving its occupants a sense of intimate surroundings, while together (viewed from the stage) giving the impression of space and majesty.

The Andre Huguenet Theatre

This fully-fledged experimental theatre is situated in the northwest corner of the Sand du Plessis Theatre Complex. The main foyer provides direct access into the auditorium.

Beneath the main foyer is a refreshment room for use by the public or for private parties.

The Lesedi FM Jazz Joint is situated on the fourth floor of the Sand du Plessis Theatre Complex and with its carpets, wooden finishes and bar, it provides a sociable atmosphere.

Marble Foyer

The Marble Foyer with its blue-veined white Carara marble floor and columns serves as the main access to all public areas of the theatre. It also houses the Art Gallery and The Muse.

The booking office is also accessible from here.

It is ideally suited as an exhibition or banqueting hall.

Balcony Foyer

This foyer provides access to the balcony areas of the auditorium, and may be reached either by stairs from the main foyer or via the lifts from the parking garages.

It is equipped with refreshment counters as well as toilet facilities for paraplegics.

It can also be used as a venue for cocktail functions.

Backstage

The backstage area of the Sand du Plessis Theatre is a big and very popular venue to stage

  • launches,
  • functions,
  • various jazz and light music concerts,
  • disco's parties and
  • raves.

The area can house up to 1 000 people and can be arranged in various set-ups.
